Do it again

Boring

The one thing that we can agree on is there is a lot of sameness in life. But if every day was exactly the same as the last one, life would get boring quickly. It’s like that groundhog day movie. Eventually the little mischief maker in each of us would pop out to inject a note of whimsy into what was coming up next. Or even worse, humans would remain satisfied with the status quo and not change. That would mean no new tech, cars, clothes or food and the economy would be completely different. Not enough juice. It’s good to have some basic routines to provide a baseline because having a deeper sense of what really works relieves the brain of decision making and opens up those pesky cells for other uses. Most of our lives move at the speed of a clock. Checking the time informs what comes next. There doesn’t even seem space to do more. And new stuff takes up more bandwidth than well-developed habits. That extra space lets anything we want to taste have all the room it needs to get a chance to survive. If humans could transfer this same reasoning to more aspects of life, there is the possibility that trying something new would seem like an everyday activity. Then more of the same would share the stage with more of the different.

Take Five

Each week this year, read through the suggestions and see how they call out to you.

  1. What way are you different today than yesterday?
  2. How much of life is boring?
  3. How do you decide what to do every day?
  4. What gives you a deeper appreciation of time?
  5. How do you use time?

Come back each day to see if something changes about the effect of an activity. Repeat choices to identify different thoughts. You are not the same person every day. Your life shouldn’t be either.
