NEXT Risk

Risky Business

The first reaction you have to the word risk is your subconscious way of letting you know how you feel about it. If it brings up negative feelings, it might scare you. If you think of it in a more challenging manner, you may be more comfortable with it. It is just your ordinary internal signaling and worth noting. If you are risk adverse, you may be more security minded. Hearth and home protective. Never let your children go outside by themselves protective. Always buying the warranty protective.

Risk it All

It is definitely not an everyday activity to risk it all. Think Vegas-style putting it all on the line. Literally, that just means those chips you won lined up to see if lady luck will answer your call. The reason we get so excited in lotteries and casinos when we win is because it is unexpected. Many others have risked it all and not won. We see them later at the bar with the frowny face eating the free nuts. They might regret that earlier choice because they didn’t win but let’s look at that thought. They were having fun in the moment and it looked delightful. Their thought changed based on the fact that they didn’t win more chips. They could have kept the thought that it was super fun to just get caught up in that exceptional moment of excitement. It’s all in their head.

Peril or Temptation

Where would your world be without risk? If you want to really get deep, it isn’t completely safe to drive down the road in some conditions, but we do so to get to work or other appointments. There are everyday moments that include risk that we just take for granted; for instance, we eat oysters. Please let me know how the first person to do that reconciled that in their brain. Maybe they were super hungry and lived by the water. They avoided peril, so others followed. Eventually, riskier behavior seemed less likely to harm. Like eating sea urchin or artichokes. You have to dig deep to get to the edible parts. A little risk for deliciousness.

Take Healthy Risks

Risk lets us choose each time and that is spectacular. We can go for it depending on how we feel in that moment. But it isn’t a bad idea to go for more risk. Look for healthy risks and follow their lead. Try something new. When you dip your toes in that cold stream, take a deep breath and jump. You might enjoy it. When you have a chance that doesn’t look like it will come again, try it. Jump past that barrier you have installed and see what is on the other side. You might find something that will payoff. And if it doesn’t, you can still sit at the bar and tell your exciting story and share the nuts.

What risky thing can you do to challenge yourself? What thought comes to mind with the word risk? Can you choose a healthy risk to undertake?
