Practice constantly
It shouldn’t hurt
Our bodies are amazing contraptions. This week gives us the opportunity to focus on the physical parts of the human form without using them only for competition. Your daily steps may still be tracked but how they feel will increase in importance. It isn’t necessary to give up a workout, but its value grows when observed differently. That daily shower to remove invisible grime should wash over you in a new way. That collection of parts that carries us around on a daily basis should bring some satisfaction, but humans tend to find fault endlessly with its shape and abilities. It’s not as if there are many people running around sermonizing about how much they love their bodies. The more universal feeling is of inadequacy. Too much in this spot or too little in another. Babies don’t have these thoughts, but we do start to absorb them in youth with the consistent discussion that goes on around us. If you add our interest in the sport of comparison to the mix, nobody (literally) seems content.
Take Five
Each week this year, read through the suggestions and see how they call out to you.
- Previously, how did you think about tracking how many steps you took each day?
- Do you find any enjoyment in physical exercise? Does a routine make you feel as if you are taking care of your body?
- Examine your reasons for taking a bath or shower. How do they fit into your daily hygiene strategy?
- Does showering after sweating bring any change in the way you feel about the use of water?
- What part of your body are you satisfied with? What would you change first?
Come back each day to see if something changes about the effect of each activity. Repeat choices to identify different thoughts. You are not the same person every day. Your life shouldn’t be either.
