Time off of what exactly?

Take me out to the ballgame

When I was young, my family rarely went on vacation. There were summer sports to practice and participate in and also the fact that parents didn’t have enough time off to make reservations at a four-star resort. I don’t think my friends went anywhere either, so I didn’t feel deprived. Visiting other family members doesn’t count as a vacation. IYKYK. Today’s parents are much more active in the choice and regularity of making sure that there is some fun planned when school break occurs. They may even enjoy the trip themselves. Times have definitely improved when it comes to how parents interact with their own kids. Some parents really listen to them too. Childhood has improved overall. How that change happened is a generally accepted concept that the next generation should have it better. That is a terrific notion. It is a lot to be proud of that once that first family down the block went to an amusement park and returned to talk about it, everyone felt the need to go too. It had a little of the keeping up with the Jones’ feel to it but worked out for all involved. It’s nice to think that everyday has a little magic in it that adds to the overall enjoyment of life. Humans are encouraged to think mindfully about that first sip of pour-over coffee they lovingly concocted. We also hear it’s good to be grateful for heat, light and the actual stuff we bring home to add to our physical comfort. These are wonderful actions to help us remember how lovely it is to be alive. Precious even. If it is difficult to remember to thank farmers for producing that kale you are eating, that can change. Every aspect of life can feel like a little trip outside of our environment and become a way to remember how fortunate we are to be alive.

Take Five

Each week this year, read through the suggestions and see how they call out to you.

  1. What are you most thankful for regularly?
  2. Can you list your best life trips away from home?
  3. Can taking time off really change you?
  4. What influences your vacations?
  5. If you have a bucket list, what is laying in the bottom?

Come back each day to see if something changes about the effect of an activity. Repeat choices to identify different thoughts. You are not the same person every day. Your life shouldn’t be either.
