Limiting your What on Earth

Life tends to sail along fairly well in early adulthood. The focus is on getting established, starting jobs, figuring out relationships and dealing with how to maneuver the occasional unexpected dilemma. It’s the training period for how to live and it’s busy because many things are brand new situations. The words of the class valedictorian are still ringing loudly about being yourself. The trouble with that advice is that most young adults don’t know who they really are yet. There is tremendous pressure to determine what to do with the rest of life. This same pressure comes up at other predictable times. But there are basic tips that can provide more options for getting on the right road earlier.

What circumstances will work Best

Traveling fast is important because we know time is limited and it’s more fun. Most humans grasp onto the first option that presents itself by default in most situations. But there are questions to ask that provide better guidance in decision-making. Comparing options for stated desires starts to create more awareness of how to get results. Being specific about defining what your brain wants as a goal integrates the actual steps to take. Instead of wanting to be rich, name what the actual amount of money you believe represents wealth. Lists work well for defining travel sites, experiences to enjoy and material manifestations of success in your life. Once your brain has a picture, it can go to work on it. The reason most undefined goals aren’t met is because they were all foggy. If you want to learn how to bake, practice making a new recipe each week. Give yourself some rules to follow.

Non-negotiable Whats

This should be easy. List everything that you do not want in your life. Include the physical stuff, like living in a climate you can’t tolerate, to responsibilities that you don’t find fulfilling. The opposite list starts to create itself and that’s what you do want. When you focus on inclusion, those choices pop up in technicolor. Those are also signposts to your values. Choices get easier when you already know what vital means to you. Consciously deciding ahead of time what to include in your life makes the mid-life transition much easier. When you hit transformative milestones, it is normal to second guess if you have chosen wisely. But if you opted on building your life of whats before you get to the crisis point, you won’t have to purge the non-functioning parts.

Remember What

Every day you prepare a part of your legacy. Start with what is said about you when you leave the room. If in doubt, ask around, and if you find something you don’t care for, change. That is invaluable help. There are no laws that limit anyone from being the best possible human. There is no shame in being known for kindness, friendship or any other goody-two-shoes values. It is perfectly acceptable not to be the grumpy human. And it is your choice. You can even be the funny person or the character that plans the best evenings out. They always seem to be having fun and they aren’t lonely. Knowing where you want to end up just involves choosing the path on how to get there. In the end, others will be able to proclaim your progress. Give them something to talk about.

Who is the most memorable person in your life? The best time to start building the life is right now. What is in the way? Can you pick three values to concentrate on that will insure a fulfilling life for you?
