Which Witch

During the Salem trials, over 200 people were accused of being witches. Nineteen were executed. But the collateral damage was wide and deep. Suspicion took over and ran with accusations everywhere. Trust dissolved. The speculation was the accelerant on the fire. Once you didn’t know whether to believe your neighbor was or was not a witch, the damage was done. Suspects never got the option to be seen as blameless ever again.

Witch Trials

When the rabble started wanting to prove their point, there was no turning back. The slightest weirdo act was justification for being accused of witchcraft. And by weirdo act, I mean anything that wasn’t something normally done. Any slip in normal behavior was seen as evidence. Humans are particularly good at being weird, so there was a lot of finger-pointing. Essentially, anything that an individual wouldn’t see themselves doing was considered as a reason to proclaim that witchcraft was involved. Don’t be different was the meaning behind the accusations.

Witch Me

It is striking to think of how many of us would be considered witches today based on these standards. Standing out as ourselves is difficult enough without having to deal with the fact that our neighbors are sure we are busy conjuring up secret stews. In fact, their creepy interest in us would probably ensure our thoughts that our neighbors are probably practicing the craft due to their staring and pointing at us at every opportunity. Going out would be impossible because the constant inspection would remove any chance of enjoyment. Hiding behind the drapes would come back into fashion so that a watchful eye could be kept on the locals.

So What Witch

The best defense is often a great offense. So what if my humanness appears to be different than yours. That is the stuff that makes humans interesting. Trying to find out why other humans have different beliefs brings us right back to being interesting. Since everyone doesn’t look good in a black pointy hat, it provides a wide range of dressing choices. The actual fun of being unlike anyone else is showing off the difference. That is how we make ourselves known, attract recognition for being unique and push aside those who think groupthink is cool. The cults never win after all. They always break under the weight of sameness.

Can you embrace your uncommonness? What do you think is eccentric about you? Does everyone have the same right to be themselves?
