Ordinary Closet

Hang it up

Walk In

It’s possible that most of the secrets you have are kept in your closet. Literally. Children tend to have smaller closets due to the actual size of their clothing, the fact that there are fewer pieces and the chance that outgrowing clothing requires more frequent replacements. Adults tend to accumulate clothing over the course of many years even though styles and sizes change. Sometimes nostalgia attaches itself to items or the desperate thought that a piece of clothing may come back into vogue. Those items keep moving further and further into the back of the closet just waiting to be rediscovered. Adults don’t like to clean out their closets. It sounds like something your mother commanded you to do on a sunny Saturday when you already had more important things planned. And cleaning out a closet means figuring out what to do with all the stuff inside of it. Cheerful articles proclaim that sorting piles will help with the project. They don’t often mention the time necessary to decide which mound to use or the time taken to move the piece as its fate switches. The removal of a hanger may seal the deal. If a human is courageous enough to get through the sorting and place the often-donated threads into a proper bag, a feeling of elation can occur. The best feeling might be that casting off the past that is holding back more future. Realizing that a past favorite was available for future wearing gives it a new life. Clothing can feel like old friends who recently moved back into favor. In the end, the dangling empty hangers might be the best part. The sight of empty hangers means that the reward of future shopping might be in the cards. The little bits of empty space can also serve as a reminder of what is really required in a wardrobe. That space can represent the next you.

Are you dressed

Option #1: Draw your closet.

Option #2: Can you name your favorite pieces of clothing?

Option #3: What will you be wearing next year?

That’s it. After you choose the option that best describes the closet you use, take a few minutes to describe why you chose that option and what action, if any, may come next.
