Almost but not quite
Certainty is so uncertain. Humans are actually very good at accepting uncertainty because nothing is really known about what is going to happen for sure in the next few minutes, or hours or days. The weather has trained us well. It is difficult to really know why weather reporters aren’t more neurotic when nothing they report has a 100% chance of occurring. That’s where ish comes in handy. Humans can be humanish by aiming at skills, values and feelings by adding the ish. That’s probably great news. It’s difficult to do most things at their highest levels. And the addition of the ish allows for a much wider interpretation of any number of areas. This can seem a little wobbly, but it does have a little base to build on. That means that there is little chance of limiting growth. Perhaps we should all engage in describing our lives with this updated suffix to indicate to others where we are attempting to move the needle. Cutting down on the chances of feeling as if amateur status is not wonderful could expand our interests. When the expectation to achieve perfection is removed, the gap gets filled up with other scales.
Take Five
Each week this year, read through the suggestions and see how they call out to you.
- What ish describes you today?
- How much time would you gain if you didn’t prove your perfection?
- How do you measure your degree of competency?
- What do you like to compare yourself to?
- Do you lose time worrying about getting great?
Come back each day to see if something changes about the effect of an activity. Repeat choices to identify different thoughts. You are not the same person every day. Your life shouldn’t be either.
