Today is a day

Affirmations are easy to find and pleasant to read. Sometimes they even make you think hard enough to have some effect. Generally speaking, we are exposed to so much all day long that we have to hold back from responding to everything. The habit of non-response becomes the norm and our natural excitement level decreases. Our lives are way more exciting than our ancestors but all that input strains our still evolving systems. Brains take a while to catch up.

Today flies quickly

Mindfulness advocates will remind you to live in the moment. It is very hard to do. We naturally like to look forward in anticipation. And anticipation can bring tremendous satisfaction. Ketchup has proven its point by slowly flowing from the bottle onto many burgers. It delayed the gratification but upped the perceived satisfaction in our brains. But today, really today, is something you have in your hands. It will be gone tomorrow and a new today will give you another chance. But why squander the one right here in front of us? It may require a full stop to consider. This takes a lot of courage to do. Just stop and live for a moment in today. It may be a new experience and you may want to repeat it after trying it.

Special Today

Every day is special in some way. When the days seem to meld together, that is a sign to pause and consider. Everyday is not meant to just seamlessly blend into the next. The world is a magical place that makes seeds turn into vegetables, flowing water create cascading falls, babies roll over unannounced, lightning bugs entertain us with their signaling and gentle heat turn raw eggs into deliciousness. We each have the ability to inject a little something-something into each day. Think about this day. Right now, right here, what would increase its experience? It shouldn’t take winning the lottery to make today your day. You can do that yourself.

Make it so

When we set out to enjoy each day, life changes. Abruptly moving your point of view adjusts what you see and experience. It’s like deliberating taking a cold shower after deliberating working out after deliberating getting out of bed on the first alarm. The change in choice is small but spectacular in effect. Knowing that we each have the amazing ability to create this much new life may scare you. Good. But stop for a moment. Listen to your life. If today is yawning back, you know what to do next.

Can you trust yourself to see what happens when you really take charge of today? Do you have the guts to love something about today? Can you break out of the rest of the crowd that just wants to complain and whine about life?
