Who you

No grammar required

If you had to introduce yourself without using your name or describe what you look like or do for a living, what would happen? Only you know who you really are, so depending on how this is interpreted you might not be recognizable to your bestie. Some days I would describe myself using whatever uniquely lovely features I feel, and others might be a litany of my flaws. That would be helpful prior to examining my conscience at least. The real truth is that there is a difference between my inner being and my outer self. This is what keeps us more presentable to those who want to see these traits. Humans search for the who of others by measurements or comparisons. When we project certain details onto others, we grade them. It’s a little like that teacher who never really got to see who you were that year you didn’t show up for class very much but scored well in the final. They decided on who you were based on your lack of attendance. Sometimes, relationships use that same scoring method. I know that I can count on me for my own final. But there are days when I barely show up too. Not as many, but still, I grade myself.

Week 16: Look in the mirror

In reality, does anyone really know who we are? Maybe we aren’t supposed to know anyone else if we haven’t gotten to figure out who we really are. Not pretend to be for appearances. Not that person who puts on that smile when faced with a selfie request. If we don’t dig a little and get to know who we are, can we count on ourselves? I wrestle with the reality that we still have to be certain humans at specific times. Mostly when there is no choice. But I admit to not playing that game as much as I grow more into myself. It just takes that growth to not fit in anymore.
